Welcome to the Omni-Games blog

First, welcome! If you follow r/OmniGamesInfo you'll know I post updates there most days. From today, those updates have a proper home on the website itself.

Why a blog?

Reddit has been great for the community side of the project and that isn't changing. The problem is that a lot of what I write there ~ why I've made a decision, what a DAT import turned up, what's coming next ~ gets buried after a few days and is hard to find again. It also lives away from the data it's talking about.

Writing here first means:

  • Every post is dated and easy to find again
  • Posts can link straight to the platforms, titles, companies and franchises they talk about
  • The site keeps its own record of how and why the project has changed over time

Reddit will then link to the post, and the discussion still happens there. Each post will have a link to its Reddit thread at the bottom.

What will be posted

Posts fall into three categories:

  • Code ~ new pages, changes to existing ones, bug fixes and the reasoning behind them
  • Content ~ new platforms, DAT updates, relationship mapping and anything interesting the data turns up
  • Spotlight ~ a closer look at a single game, company, platform or franchise

The plan is a weekly roundup in the same spirit as the "Where's my head at" posts, plus deeper posts when something deserves more than a few lines. For example, when a new platform goes in I would rather explain what it was, what the DATs show and what is still undumped than just say "added X".

What isn't changing

Omni-Games is still free with no paywalls, and it still catalogues metadata and checksums only. The subreddit is still the place for questions, bug reports and suggestions.

If you spot any bugs/quirks on the new blog pages, let me know.
