Overview

The SG-1000 taught Sega a few things: timing is everything, launching on the same day as Nintendo’s Famicom is not ideal timing, and a strong arcade catalogue only goes so far against Super Mario Bros.

Released in Japan on 15 July 1983, the SG-1000 was Sega’s first step from the arcade into the living room. It sat alongside the SC-3000, a home-computer version that ran the same cartridges, and was followed by the redesigned SG-1000 II in 1984 before the Mark III replaced it in 1985. Outside Japan it was released through local distributors in Taiwan, Australia, New Zealand, France, Italy and South Korea.

Its library is built largely on Sega’s own arcade hits, cut down to fit modest hardware, but it also marks the start of some famous careers. Champion Boxing was Yu Suzuki’s first game and Girl’s Garden was Yuji Naka’s, years before Hang-On and Sonic the Hedgehog. For collectors it’s a short, characterful library that shows where Sega’s console story began.
