Neo Geo (MVS)

Arcade system board

SNK's arcade system that put up to six games in one cabinet, and kept the 2D fighting golden age running for fourteen years.

Overview

The MVS taught arcade operators a few things: one cabinet can hold six games, swapping a cartridge beats replacing a cabinet, and nobody ever has enough credits for one more round of The King of Fighters.

Launched by SNK in 1990, the Multi Video System was a cartridge-based arcade platform. Cabinets held one, two, four or six games at once, and operators could change titles simply by swapping cartridges, which made the MVS far cheaper to run than dedicated machines. It shared its hardware with the Neo Geo AES home console, which is why so many arcade-perfect conversions reached the living room.

The MVS stayed in production for years after most arcade platforms had been replaced, with new releases continuing into 2004. Its library is the home of SNK's best-known series (The King of Fighters, Samurai Shodown, Fatal Fury and Metal Slug), and its cartridges remain some of the most collected arcade hardware in the world.
