Overview

The Neo Geo AES taught players several important things: arcade hardware in your living room is an excellent idea, four buttons can apparently be enough for almost anything, and apparently there was no such thing as a sensible price for a video game.

More importantly, the Neo Geo AES brought genuine arcade-quality hardware into the home, offering players essentially the same games and capabilities found on SNK’s Neo Geo MVS arcade systems. Released in 1990, it stood apart from conventional consoles with its powerful hardware, large cartridges, exceptional 2D graphics, and unusually high-quality arcade conversions, although its premium hardware and cartridge prices placed it firmly at the luxury end of the market.

From Metal Slug and The King of Fighters to Samurai Shodown and Fatal Fury, the AES became closely associated with technically impressive sprite work, fast-paced fighting games, and some of the most ambitious 2D arcade experiences of its era. Its compatibility with the broader Neo Geo ecosystem also gave the platform a remarkably consistent library as SNK continued supporting the hardware long after its contemporaries had moved on to newer generations. The following chart visualises the growth of the Neo Geo AES library and how it was distributed across regions throughout the platform’s lifespan.
