Overview

The Sega Chihiro Satellite Terminal PC taught arcade players several important things: sometimes an arcade machine needs a satellite, sometimes that satellite needs its own computer, and apparently putting an Xbox-derived system in one cabinet wasn't complicated enough.

More importantly, the Chihiro Satellite Terminal PC was designed to support Sega's networked arcade experiences, working alongside Chihiro-based arcade hardware to handle the additional requirements of connected and multi-terminal games. Rather than serving as a conventional standalone arcade platform, it formed part of a larger system, providing the infrastructure needed to coordinate gameplay and communication between the main arcade machines and their associated terminals.

The hardware reflects an increasingly networked direction for Japanese arcades during the early 2000s, when multiplayer experiences could extend beyond simply linking two cabinets together. By separating the satellite-terminal functions from the primary game hardware, Sega could build more elaborate arcade installations while retaining the Chihiro's Xbox-derived architecture at their core. The following chart visualises the library associated with the Chihiro Satellite Terminal PC and how it was distributed across regions throughout the system's lifespan.
