Overview

The Sega Chihiro taught arcade players several important things: an Xbox could apparently become an arcade machine, Halo wasn't the only thing that could make Microsoft's hardware work for a living, and Sega was perfectly happy to borrow a console when it could save everyone a bit of engineering.

More importantly, the Chihiro represented Sega's move towards a more flexible and cost-effective arcade platform, adapting the architecture of the original Xbox for commercial arcade use. Introduced in the early 2000s, the system combined familiar Xbox-based hardware with the specialised components and security measures required for arcade operation, giving developers a powerful foundation for increasingly ambitious 3D games while reducing the need to design an entirely new platform from scratch.

The Chihiro went on to power a range of Sega arcade titles, particularly those that benefited from the Xbox architecture's strong 3D capabilities. Games such as OutRun 2 demonstrated the system's ability to deliver detailed environments and fast-moving gameplay, while other releases showed how the underlying hardware could be adapted to different arcade experiences. The following chart visualises the growth of the Chihiro library and how it was distributed across regions throughout the system's lifespan.
