Overview

American Laser Games taught arcade players a few things: a laserdisc can hold an entire Western town, every bad guy reloads in exactly the same place, and the undertaker always has something to say about your aim.

Based in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the company began by building laserdisc training simulators for law enforcement before turning the same technology into arcade entertainment. Its games used live-action video played from laserdisc, with a light gun to shoot at filmed actors as scenes branched on hit or miss. Mad Dog McCree (1990) became a surprise hit and set the template for the rest of the line.

The result is a small, instantly recognisable library of full-motion video shooters spanning the Wild West, gangland Chicago and outer space. Because the games depend on laserdisc players and video footage, preserving them is as much about the discs as the code.
