Overview

The Nintendo Entertainment System taught an entire generation a few important lessons: turtles are evil, mushrooms are beneficial, and repeatedly headbutting bricks is a perfectly reasonable problem-solving technique.

More importantly, the NES transformed videogaming from a niche hobby into a global cultural force. While North America was recovering from the videogame crash of the early 1980s, much of Europe was already deep into the era of home computers and bedroom coders. Nintendo’s grey little box arrived anyway, carving out its own identity with strict quality control, unforgettable mascots, and a library that would go on to define entire genres.

Whether it was Mario Bros. setting the standard for side-scrolling platformers or The Legend of Zelda introducing players to sprawling open-ended adventure, NES games consistently proved how much creativity could be squeezed from limited hardware. The console’s influence stretched far beyond its 8-bit lifespan, laying the groundwork for modern game design while turning countless living rooms into battlegrounds for sibling rivalry. The following chart visualises the growth of the NES library and how it was distributed across regions throughout the console’s lifespan.
